In the 21st year of Silla King Seongdeok’s reign, a monk named Sambeop brought the remains of the Sixth Patriarch of Seon Buddhism, Master Hyeneung after his study abroad in Tang, enshrined the remains here when constructing this temple. Later Master Jingam in the 2nd year of Silla King Moonseong’s reign (840) called this temple Okcheonsa but the name was changed to Ssanggyesa in the 2nd year of Silla King Jeonggang’s reign. Currently, Ssanggyesa Temple holds a total of 29 cultural assets including the National Treasure No. 47 (Stele for Buddhist Monk Master Jingam) and 9 treasures of Korea.
